Asian Openbill

Scientific Name: Anastomus oscitans

IUCN status: Least Concern

A large wading bird, found in the Asian subcontinent and south east Asia. This bird can be identified by the arched upper mandible and the curvature of the lower mandible, that leaves a slight gap between the upper and lower mandibles. They are known to have a diet of snails, as can be seen in the photo, which is helped by the curvature of the beak. This bird is known for its glossy black wings that are conspicuous when in full flight. Their habitats includes wetlands, river banks and other water-defined landscapes. They are known for their colonial breeding – a form of group living – , laying their eggs on nests that are on the pinnacle of half-immersed trees (mangroves etc) and are made from the craftmanship of sticks.
