Orange Minivet

Scientific Name: Pericrocotus flammeus

IUCN Status: Least Concern

An Orange Minivet in Sri Lanka, with an underbelly that is brightly colored in orange. The Orange Minivet is predominantly a forest species largely encountered in tropical and subtropical lowland forests and even montane forests. This species can be found as single species or mixed species flocks. The male of the species, as shown in these images, has an orange underbelly with black upper plumage. Even the chin, upper neck and apex areas of the bird are colored in black. The Orange Minivets are insectivores in terms of their diets.

There was a recent revision – in 2009 -, with the Pericrocotus flammeus distinctly placed and named as the Orange Minivet, which is a modification from the previously assigned name of Scarlet Minivet (Pericrocotus speciosus). The Scarlet Minivets in the South-East Asians islands of Java and Bali are also bright orange in their outward appearance which mandates a detailed scientific exploration of this complex of bird species.
