Yellow-fronted Barbet

Scientific Name: Psilopogon flavifrons

A green barbet with a blue throat and a bright peacock-blue face, a yellow forecrown and dappled underparts which are of a lighter green compared to the upper coverts, with bristle-like projections rising from around the beak. The Yellow-fronted Barbet is known to largely inhabit the wet zone of the country but have been identified in the intermediate zone. The song of the Yellow-fronted Barbet is a loud “ke-cheer” that can be heard well into the distance.

The Yellow-fronted Barbet is endemic to the Sri Lankan isle and can be seen in plantations, gardens, moist forests, as well as wetlands. This barbet with a bright yellow forehead, feeds on berries, fruits and on occasion, insects.

In local culture, the Yellow-fronted Barbet appears on the Sri Lankan 5 rupee postal stamp.
